President Obama Holds Court

As has been reported on a slew of web sites, President Obama celebrated his birthday by welcoming LeBron James, Dwayne Wade, Carmelo Anthony, Derrick Rose, Joakim Noah, Magic Johnson, Bill Russell, and UConn star Maya Moore to a pick-up game to entertain a group of “wounded warriors” — troops injured in action — along with some members of a White House mentoring program.

After the game, several players joined Obama at the White House for a barbecue featuring shrimp pulled from the Gulf of Mexico.

The White House intentionally didn’t make too big a deal of the whole thing. When asked why there weren’t any cameras in the gym during the 2 hour game, Press Secretary Robert Gibbs said that President Obama “just wanted to play.”

Nice story. Sounds like a fun time for all.

But it did get me thinking about a few questions I’d like to have answered.

1a) Who guarded the President? Seriously? Who picked up that assignment. ‘Melo? Magic? James? Tell me you wouldn’t want to see Obama take LeBron to the hoop.

1b) Did anyone take it easy on the President? Don’t get me wrong, I’m sure that Obama wouldn’t expect special treatment on the court, but if you’re Derrick Rose and you pick up the Leader of the Free World out on the wing and he cuts to the paint, are you *really* going to try to steal that ball from him?

If you’re Noah, are you *really* going to try to swat the ball into his face?

2) Which would teams be? By my count, there’s only nine players, so you’d have to 4 on 4 with a sub (unless Reggie Love joined in). Either way, with a group like that, you’d have to pick teams. It’s not like you could shoot free throws to decide whose on which team in that bunch, you’d be waiting for someone to miss all day.

I could see Obama grabbing Love, Russell, Magic and Moore and taking on James, Wade, ‘Melo, Rose and Noah just for the fun of it. Of course, I could also see Obama’a squad getting CREAMED with that lineup.

So what about:

Team 1 Team 2
Dwayne Wade Derrick Rose
Magic Johnson President Obama
LeBron James Carmelo Anthony
Reggie Love Joakim Noah
Maya Moore Bill Russell

It’s got to be pretty fun being a basketball nerd and the President at the same time, doesn’t it?

3) Looking over this list, it seems like this is a pretty solid assortment of several of the most respected, likable characters in basketball.

Interesting how Smoke Monster wasn’t there. Hm…

  1. Perhaps unrelated … but I would also point out that our Commander In Chief cancelled his scheduled speech at the BSA National Jamboree (instead sending a 2 minute video message) and, instead, made an appearance on “The View.”

Daytime talk shows. Basketball games to “just play.” Doesn’t exactly inspire me as a “leader.”

  2. Obama is doing everything that people would do if they were President. Like when your a kid and you say, “yeah when I’m president I’m going to invite the best professional basketball players over to play a pick up game. Then I’m going to have Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder over to play a concert for me. Then I’m not going to use toilet paper anymore, I’m going to have a fresh basket of white bunnies that I will use to wipe my ass and toss them out the window.” Watch for the last story next.
